Self-care is one of those things that I simultaneously get extremely serious and organized about, and then will completely forget and fall to pieces over. When my working schedule was a little more consistent, Sundays used to be a sacred day for me. I enjoyed wearing no makeup all day, finishing up laundry, planning out my week and possibly binging on a television show. It was magic.
Now that I’m a freelance makeup artist and schedule consistency is really a thing of my past, I miss having Sundays to myself. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t, nor does it mean that I can’t do any of these things on a random Tuesday either. So here is an easy way to set yourself up for some self-care so you can go to bed relaxed and ready to take on whatever the cruel world wants to throw at you.
Step One: Wear a Face Mask
Though I have not used a mask that I can say has extremely changed my life, I feel as if the process of doing it makes us all feel so special and a little extra nourished. If you don’t have one at home already that is your go-to for whatever your skin needs are, no worries. You can easily make one with the common ingredients below:
Mix 1 teaspoon Olive Oil, ½ teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a bowl. Once it turns into a paste, you can apply it all over your face and neck. Make sure your skin is clean and a little damp before application; leave it on for a minimum of 5 minutes, but really for as long as you want to. The olive oil will soften the skin and the honey is great for cleaning pores and keeping acne away. Then the baking soda is the real MVP, having anti-inflammatory, anti bacterial and antiseptic properties.

Step Two: Take a Bath
Baths are another one of those things that almost seem a little tedious, so when we take the time to do them, we really feel like we’ve taken a moment for ourselves, and we should. Most of us probably have some bath bombs lying around, so if you do, throw one of those in the tub and run the hot water. But if you don’t, a bubbly body wash will do just fine. I prefer to run the water extremely hot because I know I may be in there a while and the temp is going to cool a bit, but whatever works best for you. Now while the bath is running, you move on to the third (and most important step).
Step Three: Look at Yourself Naked
Now this may seem silly to some of us, but one major key in self-care is self-love. I used to completely avoid the mirror at all costs when I showered until I did some serious work on accepting my body. The biggest help for me was looking at myself naked. Now maybe some of you are completely ok with this, and if that’s the case, do it anyway! Grab your stomach and your arms; notice your freckles and your scars. If you’re feeling really into it take a mirror and admire your vagina while you’re at it! Just take a minute to appreciate your body right now, in all it’s glory, before you hop in the tub and wash yourself like the goddess you are.
Step Four: Be in the Moment
While you’re in the tub, really enjoy this time alone. I like to turn off the lights, light an amazing smelling candle and shave my legs. Again admiring all of my body parts, rubbing them, bathing them with as much care and love as I possibly can. Sometimes I will also throw on a Yoga or Meditation station on Spotify to help organize my thoughts and put me in a relaxing mood. But I don’t want to be too distracted by lyrics. If this isn’t for you, you can always choose to get lost in a book. But know that this moment is about you and what makes you feel pampered and loved.
I also use this time to pray and talk to God. Which is kind of crazy because I don’t consider myself to be a religious person, I’m just very spiritual. I feel like when I’m at this completely vulnerable and pampered state is when I can easily connect with the divine and set my intentions for the week, and the rest of my life really. This is also when all of my emotions tend to come out and I feel comfortable releasing them. You didn’t think I was going to write this whole thing and not mention a good cry, right?
So when my face is washed and the bath drains, I can throw on my nightgown and go to sleep knowing I’m surrounded by love and good intentions. That my emotions are out on the table but I’m nurtured enough to take care of whatever comes my way, and who doesn’t want that?
