Artist Spotlight: Woke Brown Feminist

Written by: Kaitlyn

For each Crybaby Subscription Box, we think that it’s important to highlight the makers and the movers that made each box happen. This is last box before the end of the year, and you can pick your own up in the shop now! The purpose of the box is to spread support and love while also supporting creatives and their endeavors. These are their stories.

This month, I screamed out of excitement when I saw what Barbie and Destinie from Woke Brown Feminist made for our box. It's everything I've ever wanted: a perfect feminist tote bag.

These awesome ladies have created a brand for woke, intersectional feminists who want to actually create change in this world.

They are advocates for various issues including body positivity, feminism and Black Lives Matter.

"I realize (being an advocate for BLM) is a privilege to choose when and where I can feel sad about it as oppose to the people who cannot change their situation and deal with this daily," Barbie said. "but it doesn’t take away from my support and solidarity with the movement."

In addition to their advocacy, they even have a place on their website for you to send a postcard to your state senators to issues that are important to you.

As part of their mission to create a more inclusive world, Barbie and Destinie both believe that it's important for everyone to be in touch with their emotions.

"I feel like being comfortable with your emotions is being comfortable and honest with yourself," Destinie said. "It opens up the gateway for people to like you for who you really are. Good and bad.

They also touched on how being in touch and facing your emotions can be a healthier way to deal with anger, jealousy, and misunderstanding.

For their feminist tote bags, Destinie and Barbie were initially inspired by the "Thank You, Have a Nice Day" plastic bags. They decided to put feminist on it as well because "We think being an intersectional feminist is something to be proud of," they said.

In the future, Destinie and Barbie plan on participating in more craft fairs and launching a second line of products.

"It will be exciting to meet people in person and talk face to face about our company and our beleifs," Barbie said.

Destinie also mentioned that they are going to have some creative business conferences that empower women and are starting their own book club in a month. To stay updated on Woke Brown Feminist's events, sign up for their email list.
