My Creative Space: Christie "Gee" Kellems

Hello. My name is Christie “Gee” Kellems and I would love to share with you the space in which I blog, photo edit, write my story (which I hope one day becomes a screenplay) and all things creative in my little world!

First of all, let me tell you a little bit about myself.

This is me.

As you can see I am a bit of a dork and I am just fine with being known as that! I have a blog, as you can see from the Lisa Frank inspired logo up there! When I started this blog a few years back, it was mainly a music blog. I would interview musicians and talk about albums. This got me a little writing gig with a music magazine called Substream for a bit and that was so fun! However, after a bit I decided to venture out and interview other types of artists and also talk about my life while at the same time being a voice of hope in a world where it is easy to be discouraged.

I happen to deal with an anxiety disorder that tries to render me useless on a daily basis. Some days it takes everything in me to do anything that is remotely productive or creative. When the lovely gals here at The Crybaby Club asked me to write a little bit about ‘My Creative Space’, I got very excited! It was the little nudge I needed to revamp that very space and get back to the creative vibes I love. So without further ado I am here to share My Creative Space with you!

Before this week, this desk, which I love (left behind by my dear friend Whitney who moved to Portland) was in my living room. This was just fine until I discovered I could not focus for the life of me in there. I love to have noise on while I am home and I naturally gravitate to put on hours of Friends (thanks to Netflix) while I attempt to write. Instead of blogging my heart out, I would stare at the TV as my pals, Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey lived their every so interesting lives. With that said, I moved my space into my room between the two windows. I am looking forward to the fall when I can open those windows. Right now it is pretty much hellfire out…so I will keep them closed and enjoy the air conditioning.  You can see from the picture I have a few things going on up there! Here are a few details!

This is my most favorite mug ever! It was gifted to me from a very sweet former coworker/friend of mine! If you are a Friends fan like I am you will know that this very mug can be found in every episode where Monica’s kitchen is in. (The other side of this mug is a “non-winky” face…. which you see on the show. Just some dorky trivia for ya).  I am not much for hot beverages so I use it to hold my pens and Sharpies! I have a serious love affair with Sharpies. It’s kind of ridiculous.  You will see that I have a few Band.o pens in there as well. I am BIG BIG fan of Band.o! My bestie, Lisa bought me those pens. They have cute saying like, “Gosh you look so cute,” and “You rule so hard.” I’m like, “Aww…thanks pens! You’re the nicest writing apparatus’ ever!”

In this photo you can see what I have posted in front of my computer as I work. Here you can find:

  • Fresh flowers that my wonderful husband brings home for me. Awwwww right?!?

  • I doxie chalkboard that my pals Alex and Kelsea gave me on my last day at my pervious job. I have a little doxie named Zooey Beans so I adore this chalkboard so much! I know I should really start letting it fulfill it’s destiny and write on it. It’s just so fresh and pretty right now!

  • There are some polaroids that friends have taken of my husband and I and also some of my favorite Instax Mini 8 phots of my hubby, me with my succulent babies and our pup Zooey Beans. Oh and there are two others, one of a taxidermy alpaca (random I know) and the other is some Jesus candles with old flowers in them. The alpaca was just for fun and the Jesus candles with flowers are a sweet little symbol of my faith. (For the record if you don’t believe what I believe I will NEVER EVER make you feel weird or bad about it. People who do that are dummies and need to knock it off). Anyhow, there is a verse in the scriptures that says this… “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving.” (Matthew 6:33) I have always loved this so very much. It helps me relax and not worry so much. Those candles are in my living room but I took at cute little polaroid of them to look at when I am working. Makes me happy.

  • There is a photo of Suzy and Sam from the movie Moonrise Kingdom. This movie is one that my husband I love a lot. We actually have tattoos of us AS Suzy and Sam on our arms that our amazing friend Yanni gifted us for our wedding. I am a huge fan of Wes Anderson films. They are full of color and whimsy.

  • In the top left there is a postcard with some motorcyclist. I by no means am a motorcycle momma. That particular postcard is from The Ace Hotel in downtown L.A. It is by far one of my favorite places on the planet. I have some wonderful memories from there. My favorite was getting engaged there. It was awesome and beautiful and totally unexpected! I keep that postcard there to remember that night and all the other fun times my friends and I have had on their rooftops at night.

  • The little painting of the cupie and the doxie was a gift from my friend Scott. It is me and Zooey Beans. I have always loved this. Sadly, it was framed and fell off the wall randomly (maybe due to an earthquake) and the frame broke. Until I get a new one I hang it there in front of me because it makes me smile and it’s also a great creative boost.

  • Above the chalkboard is a little postcard with a girl holding a heart that reads “My love for you is endless.” This sweetest of sweet postcard was sent to me last week from my childhood friend Laura. I was having an extremely hard week and she mailed me a little package from Texas with some essential oils to combat anxiety. It warmed my heart and meant the world to me so I now place it there for me to remember that I have an amazing core group of friends who love and are there for me.

  • The other little notes are inspiring quotes/ art pieces and little inspirational words to sum up what my goals are. For example one reads, “Be silly. Be Honest. Be kind.” That was said by Ralph Waldo Emerson. These are three traits I try to live by and fail at at least one a day. But that is ok. I am human and that is what us humanoids do. We mess up. But we also learn from it and move on.

  • Veganism became a HUGE part of my life a couple years ago. Before that I was a vegetarian for 20 years. There are a couple of pieces from a company called Herbivore Clothing.  One says “Bacon had a mom” and that one I just like a lot, however the other says “Compassion is invincible” and that can me applied to many areas of life. Compassion is seriously lacking in this world and I know that The Crybaby Club is combatting that lack of compassion in mental illness and I think that is beautiful!

This light box is so much fun! I have used it over and over again for projects! I am a big fan! Next to it is my cute penny-holding puppy pal who sits upon a top of bright Post-its! Behind that pup you will see my 2017 Band.o planner. The Leslie Knope part of my mind loves “Jammin’ on my planner” as she would say! What I love most about Band.o planners is the cute stickers they come with and the adorable introductions to the month!

The last little bit of My Creative Space is a book (It’s called ‘Ready, Set, Novel’ by Chris Baty, Lindsey Grant and Tavia Stewart-Streit) that helps my organize my thoughts when I am writing my, well I guess it could be classified as a novel. I had ZERO clue on what I am doing when it comes to this type of writing so this gem of a find helps me. The end goal is for my mega talented, movie creating husband to turn it into a screenplay. I can’t go into too much detail about it, but I am excited to see how it turns out!

I do all my work on an MacBook Pro and use a Bamboo Tablet to edit photos if needed. Other than these things, it’s just me and my wild imagination.

Thank you much for hanging with me and letting me tell you about “My Creative Space!”

Thank you also the The Crybaby Club for welcoming me into their world. I love what you gals do and again, I am so thrilled to be a part in what you are doing.

Lots of love and virtual hugs,

Christie “Gee”-Kellems
